Data Storage

What is Data Storage?

Data storage is a collection of digital data recorded and preserved on magnetic, optical, or mechanical media.  Data storage most commonly comes in the form of block storage, file storage, and object storage.

Digital data is at the center of the modern business world. It powers the digital economy, shapes consumer behavior, and enables new services and experiences. And it’s everywhere—in the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat. It’s also at the heart of many of the world’s most significant decisions: where to build a new factory, how to power an energy grid, or how to best care for a patient.

Solidifying your company's strategies to store, manage, and safeguard valuable data should be a top priority for businesses to be successful.

Types of Storage Devices

Storage devices are used to store data and program instructions, ranging from small and inexpensive solid-state drives (SSDs) to the large and slower magnetic-drive hard disks that are still commonly used. The further data is located from the CPU, the slower the data can be accessed and the lower the noise. Even the hard drives in your computer today are much faster than they were even just a few years ago.
  • SSD and flash storage - Flash storage is a solid-state technology which means it has no moving parts.  A solid-state disk (SSD) uses flash memory for writing and storing data with less latency.  Since most of today's SSDs use flash memory, flash storage is often used interchangeably with a solid-state system.
  • Cloud storage - With the cloud, you can store your files where you want them and access them when you want them. You can access your files from anywhere with an internet connection. This is great for data like documents, databases, videos, and photos. Your files are stored on servers worldwide, so you don't have to install a lot of hard drive space on your computers or servers to store a lot of data.
  • Hybrid storage - The world of data storage is changing. The days of rigid, on-premises storage systems are being replaced by a new breed of hybrid storage systems that combine the best of both worlds. Traditional storage systems are designed to provide maximum data protection, but they come with a high price tag and require large amounts of maintenance. Cloud storage systems, on the other, are designed to provide maximum data access, but they don't offer the same level of data protection.
  • Hybrid cloud storage - Hybrid cloud storage is a combination of on-premises and cloud-based storage.  Depending on the circumstances, it can be used to store data in both the cloud and on-premises.  It can help organizations save money by not using public cloud storage services, but it can also provide increased security and flexibility.  Hybrid cloud storage is a great way to provide data storage services to customers when using the public cloud is not an option.
  • Backup software and appliances - Protect your data today with backup software and appliances. Back up data to the cloud or your storage facility, choose the backup solution that fits your needs and budget. Today’s offsite backups can include local and remote storage and retrieval, so you can select the backup solution that works best for you.

Flash Storage

Flash storage consists of solid-state technology that uses flash memory for writing and storing data. Today’s industry trends reinforce the belief that the question for most storage professionals is not whether they should deploy flash storage, but how and where they should deploy it.
